The Dead Space remake will officially debut on January 27, 2023, according to EA Motive's most recent developer live stream, which also included the game's first in-game video. While most of the live broadcast was devoted to discussing the technical aspects of the game, we did get a closer look at some of the USG Ishimura's chambers and a more thorough explanation of how some visual effects will interact with the surroundings. One quite intriguing fact is that many of the game's components were constructed from the ground up with the Frostbite engine, but were based on elements from the original game, to make the game as realistic as possible for returning fans. In the video game Dead Space, you play as Isaac Clarke, an engineer tasked with investigating a USG Ishimura distress beacon with top security officer Zach Hammond and computer technician Kendra Daniels. As the senior medical officer of the enormous starship Ishimura, Isaac's longtime lover Nicole Brennan has a personal interest in the mission's success. The team arrives at the Ishimura to find it overrun by monster zombie abominations of the crew known as necromorphs. The group works together to flee before they too become victims.

Isaac is not a skilled combatant because he is an engineer. He instead uses engineering and maintenance tools that have been modified into improvised weapons to battle the hordes of necromorphs. Because they have undergone extensive mutation, necromorphs do not react to injury as humans would; in fact, assaulting the torso and head's primary organs usually makes them stronger. Isaac must instead take his enemies down one by one, carefully chopping off their limbs and legs to win the battle.

The first step toward reform is letting Isaac the agency speak. The fact that Isaac, the engineer and the only one truly equipped to come up with solutions to fix Ishimura, never expresses his opinions in the original Dead Space will never make sense to me, even though I realize that many people will disagree with me. It's so strange that he never offers suggestions or theories about potential courses of action, choosing instead to obediently follow commands.

"One important element of the world of Dead Space is the feeling of isolation and doing things when you're scared like you've got to go to the base when it's all dark--like what the f**k is this?" Campos-Oriola said. As such, Isaac doesn't quip save for two established moments. He really only speaks when spoken to, so he'll respond to others but rarely initiate the conversation. So, thankfully, the remake won't try to undercut Dead Space's tension with unnecessary dialogue. According to Motive--and based on what I've seen of the first three chapters--Isaac's voice is just there to further sell his expertise as an engineer, nothing more.

The zero-gravity areas of Dead Space have also changed in the remake to more closely match how they feel in the sequels. As a result, Isaac flies off into the air and has complete control over his movement rather than leaping from one place to another. This has significantly changed how several puzzles in Dead Space function; for instance, reactivating the Centrifuge in Chapter 3 is far less difficult. The two generators are easy to grip and transfer into position; there is no need to carefully circle the room or clumsily hop about. From one side of the room to the other, you may just jet.

The remake addresses that storytelling shortcoming, including an optional side quest where Isaac can follow Nicole's trail throughout the Ishimura during the days leading up to and during the necromorph outbreak. The quest kicks off in Chapter 2 when you first visit the Medical Bay if you choose to track down Nicole's hidden workstation, where you can find a hologram recording of Nicole theorizing that something is wrong and there's more going on than a few missing people and mysterious deaths, saying she's going to Engineering to confirm her findings.
