Battlefield 1's Story: A Gritty Anthology of World War I The single-player campaign of Battlefield 1 departs from a traditional linear narrative, instead presenting a collection of five "War Stories," each offering a poignant and personal glimpse into the global conflict of World War I from different perspectives. Preceded by a harrowing prologue, these standalone tales transport players to various theaters of the war, emphasizing the human cost and individual heroism amidst the unprecedented brutality of the Great War. Storm of Steel: A Brutal Introduction The campaign opens with "Storm of Steel," a prologue that immediately sets a grim and unflinching tone. Players are thrust into the boots of various members of the Harlem Hellfighters, an African-American infantry regiment, during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. The narrative uniquely frames the futility and chaos of trench warfare by having the player's perspective shift to another soldier upon death, underscoring the high casualty rates and the overwhelming nature of the conflict.
